Since the late 90s Enrico David has worked with fabric in his paintings, bringing together traditional craftsmanship with a refined conceptual formalization around the human figure. His iconic tapestries were first presented at the 2013 Venice Biennale, curated by Massimiliano Gioni. The works are rare as they carry a lot of labor and Enrico has started to move away from doing any additional tapestries right now. Whether working in sculpture, painting, or textile, the act of drawing has always been key to Enrico David's exploration of form. “There is an interesting phase of deciphering what that drawing is trying to do,” he explains in a 2019 interview with Sculpture magazine. “How do you describe it in a way that is not just a line on a piece of paper? How do you translate a line into a form?”
