In Sankofa: cavaleiro (Sankofa: horseman), a man rides backwards on his horse, walking in a landscape dotted by fireflies at dusk. Such symbols are, in Obá’s work, a way of seeking through nature the source of existential feelings and thoughts. With full trust in his instinct and his horse, the man gazes back at the heritage that has created the land which he now travels. “He can go forward without worry, without even needing to look where he goes,” remarks Obá;“the fireflies are the souls of the ones that came before.”
